Mental health-One of the major causes in degrading mental health in India are Depression & Anxiety Disorders.

Sometimes feeling sad,moody or guilty is very common in everyone’s life.But when this kind of feelings last for weeks,months or years,it affects your daily life & it is called Depression.

  • You will be shocked to know that according to WHO,India is the 6th most depressed country.
  • 5% Indians suffer from mental health disorders -WHO report.
  • According to a report of 2017,the rates of student suicide cases have increased by 52% in India.
  • Around half of corporate employees in India suffer from Depression & Anxiety Disorders.
  • According to WHO, women are affected more by common mental disorders when compared to man.

Yes, mental health problem is a rising issue in India. Still mental health in India has always been neglected.

So, what are the causes of Depression in India?

  • Facing of failures due to our pathetic educational system & social stress.
  • Being bullied or neglected .
  • Unemployment in India is one of the major causes of Depression in India.
  • Sometimes personal issues hamper mental health,that leads to Depression.

 

The most probable symptoms we can seein a depressed person are:

  • People faces lack of motivation.
  • Mood swings.
  • Having thoughts of death or suicide.
  • People realizes the changes in their sleeping pattern.
  • Losing weight or gaining weight within very short time.
  • Smoking cigarettes,drinking alcohol excessively.
  • According to a study in India,Generalized Anxiety disorder affect 4-6% of the total population.
  • People among the age between 20-40 years are mainly diagnosed with anxiety disorders.
  • According to a report of 2017,197 million Indians were suffering from mental disorders of whom 45 million had anxiety disorders.

In easy words, Anxiety Disorder is feeling excessive fear, nervousness & worries about each incidents even in the daily activities. Sometimes it can reach the highest level within minutes which is called Panic attacks.

 

Five common types of Anxiety disorders are:

  • Panic disorder.
  • Social phobia.
  • GAD(Generalized Anxiety Disorder).
  • PTSD(Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).
  • OCD(Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).

There are some causes by which people can face Anxiety disorders.They are-

  • Past traumatic experience can lead to anxiety disorders in a mentally stable person.
  • Stress in personal life as well as professional life.
  • Weak financial conditions etc.

Symptoms of Anxiety Disorders:

  • Difficulty when concentrating.
  • Tensed muscles.
  • Sweating excessively.
  • Taking breath rapidly.
  • Avoiding social gathering.

There are some celebrities like RandeepHooda,Deepika Padukone,Manisha Koirala who have battled against Depression.Though this is a very serious issue,still it is not impossible to overcome.We can fight against Depression & Anxiety Disorders by using these following tips:

  • Do exercise daily to boost up the positive energy in you.
  • Engage yourself with creative activities.
  • Just change your lifestyle that you have now& it really helps.
  • Challenge your negative thoughts & don’t let them control yourself.
  • Find your hobby & give enough time to it.

We should seek the help of psychologists / psychiatrists if the situation goes beyond our control.

Besides,

  • We should break those myths that are related to Depression & Anxiety Disorders;we should behave sensitively towards the sufferers.
  • Being a part of the society,it is our responsibility to create awareness through social media & many other platforms.
  • Most importantly educational institutes can play a major role to fight against Depression & Anxiety Disorders.
