“The tragedy of life is not death, but what we let die inside of us while we live”--- truly said by Norman Cousins.

India has completed a long and meaningful journey after 65 years of independence, but still there is a question mark on the freedom of women. There are several prominent evidences of social discriminations where ‘girls’ are concerned. Women are kept behind curtain most of the time. We are still considered as the images of tolerance under tyrants. The plight of women in India is still pitiable. Girls and women constitute India’s largest oppressed section. More than six decades have passed since we are independent but in the modern society, the status of women remains stagnant. Though personalities like Smt. Sarojini Naidu, Smt. Indira Gandhi, Kalpana Chawla,  Smt. Pratibha Patel, Smt. Sonia Gandhi , Smt. P.T. Usha, Smt. Mary Kom etc. have added name and fame for themselves as well as for the nation but they only represent one side of the coin, while the other, we

can see a grim picture of oppressed women.

Time is rapidly changing and correspondingly the senses of values too are changing. Now most of us believe that “God resides where women are worshipped.” The salient trait of educated mind has taught women to protest against the wrongs and injustice. The final victory will come only when we shall be able to strike the death-blow to all exploitation offering thereby full democratic rights and privileges to women belonging to all shades.

Personally, I feel women can put forth their rights, necessities and urgencies only being conscious about their rights. These rights may be gained only and only by eradicating illiteracy from the society. It is the responsibility of all of us to promote the spread of education. Till then we have no scope for taking rest, “So our battle the women’s battle is in progress.”
